Origin of the Halligan tool
The Halligan tool was developed by Hugh A. Halligan, a chief of the New York Fire Department, who sought a more efficient tool for gaining entry to buildings during firefighting operations.
After extensive experimentation he designed a lightweight, strong and versatile tool capable of performing multiple forced-entry tasks without welded parts. Although initially rejected by the NYFD due to conflict of interest concerns, its effectiveness quickly spread among fire departments across the United States.
The first department to officially adopt the tool was the Boston Fire Department, and today the Halligan bar has become a standard breaching tool for firefighters and rescue teams worldwide.
